Chapter 6

Jade

I’m still in a daze following the crazy events of the afternoon as we enter Sawyer’s. I woke up to chaos, surrounded by not only the police and an ambulance, as well as an angry Sawyer. The extent of my injuries was merely a bump on the head, and it throbs.

“You okay?” Sawyer asks for the tenth time.

I plaster on a fake smile, hiding how much pain I’m in, not to mention that I haven’t really felt well all day, and tell him, “Nothing a shower and some rest won’t cure.” He gently kisses my hair, promising that everything will be all right, and I believe him. It’s just that the fantasy world I’ve experienced since we met, or reunited, I guess, has burst thanks to reality intruding, and all the fear is creeping back in.

Once I’m in the bathroom, I strip, taking a few minutes to look at myself in the mirror. The red marks from where my body was restrained by the seat belt are visible, yet my gaze is drawn to my scars. The throbbing in my head increases the longer I stare at them, but I feel like they’re important, perhaps even a clue to who I am. Shaking it off, I step under the hot water a few minutes later and let it soothe my aches.

“Let me take care of you,” Sawyer urges as his arms encircle my midsection and pull me against his hard chest. I suddenly need his touch more than anything, knowing it can comfort me and ease my worries. And when I tell him that, he reaches for the soap, then begins to rub my breasts, his thumbs pinching my nipples after he lathers some in his hands.
